Water running down a roof with asphalt shingles
Asphalt shingles are the most popular material for homeowners right now, and for good reason. They are very affordable, highly customizable, durable, and widely available. One of the biggest advantages to asphalt shingles is that you can get almost any color, finish, shape, or size you want. Asphalt is one of the most customizable roofing options, making them a very attractive choice for anybody looking for a particular style or something unique. If you want a material that you can do almost anything you want with, asphalt is an excellent choice. We can show you what options are available to you in terms of asphalt shingles, and help you to decide what is best for you and your home. Asphalt isn’t all perfect, though. There are a few downsides. Asphalt shingles only last for around 15-30 years, and are not very environmentally friendly because they’re petroleum based. They are also not terribly resistant to wind damage or extreme weather. Even with the downsides, though, asphalt roofing remains a popular choice that works well for many Utahns.  There are two types of asphalt shingles currently available. These are:

  • Fiberglass: This shingle type uses a fiberglass base coated with asphalt. Normally, the asphalt is mixed with UV-reflecting ceramic pieces to prevent sun-bleaching
  • Organic: These shingles are made of recycled materials, frequently recycled paper. The recycled material acts as a base, with asphalt layered over it to create the waterproof barrier. This shingle type tends to be a bit more expensive, but it is a good choice for environmentally conscious homeowners.
