Slate Singles

Zoomed in image of gray slate shingles
Slate shingles are a beautiful and sophisticated roofing material. They do not rot, and are easy to maintain. This roofing type can last up to 100 years. Slate does tend to be a more costly option than many other roofing materials, but the beauty and longevity of this material still make it an appealing choice for many homeowners.

  • Natural Slate: Natural slate is just what it sounds like, slate shingles with no or very minimal processing. Natural slate comes in a couple of different colors, depending on the source. Generally, you can find it in shades of gray, blue, and sometimes red. Natural slate is exceptionally well suited to Utah due to its ability to handle expansion and contraction well throughout Utah’s seasonal weather extremes. It is also eco-friendly and immune to damage by UV rays.
  • Fiber Cement Slate: This material is quickly becoming a very appealing alternative to natural slate. It has a lower upfront cost, and it comes in a larger variety of colors and shapes. It also doesn’t need additional reinforcement and can usually be installed on an existing roof deck due to it being much more lightweight than natural slate. The downside to fiber cement slate is that it lasts about half as long as natural slate, but even with that, it lasts a very long time!
  • Bituminous Slate: The composition of this type of material is actually very similar to common roofing shingles. The main component of both is asphalt, and they tend to have about the same expected lifespan, installation process, and maintenance requirements. The outer layer is the main difference between bituminous slate and common asphalt shingles. While common shingles have a rougher, sandpaper-like feel, whereas bituminous slate has a surface that is smoother, like natural slate. One of the big perks of this material is that it’s flexible, making it a good choice for domed roofs and eyebrow windows.
